WhatsApp Tests Chat History for New Members, Unveils Updated Status and AI Features

WhatsApp is testing a significant update that could change how users join and navigate group conversations. The platform is developing a feature that lets new members view messages shared before their arrival. This move aimed at making group discussions more coherent, inclusive, and easier to follow.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature currently unlocks the previous 24 hours of chat activity for newcomers, giving them immediate context instead of starting with an empty window. Meta may also impose a limit of around 1,000 messages to manage data usage, while allowing group admins to decide whether this option remains enabled. Members may additionally be able to share recent chat history, such as the past week’s activity, to help new participants catch up more smoothly.

Industry observers see this as one of WhatsApp’s most notable usability improvements in recent months, especially for busy or rapidly growing groups where new entrants often struggle to understand ongoing conversations.

Beyond group messaging enhancements, WhatsApp has introduced a redesigned Status experience intended to make short-term updates more visible without navigating extra screens. The refreshed interface highlights contacts’ activity more clearly, improving the feature’s overall utility.

The company is simultaneously expanding its AI-driven capabilities. A new image editing tool, now available to select Android beta testers, lets users create visuals in styles such as 3D, anime, cartoon, and watercolor. It also supports background removal and replacement using built-in generative AI.

WhatsApp is coupling these updates with stronger safety measures. A strict security mode, currently in testing, automatically blocks media from unknown senders, silences unfamiliar callers, limits unsolicited group invitations, and enforces two-step verification to protect users from potential threats.
