WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Share Recent Group Chat History with New Members

WhatsApp has started testing a useful new feature that makes joining group chats much easier for new members. With the latest WhatsApp beta updates for Android, some users can now share recent group chat history when adding someone new. This feature is designed to help newcomers quickly understand what the group is about without needing repeated explanations from existing members.

Earlier, WhatsApp confirmed that this feature was under development. Now it appears to be rolling out gradually to public beta testers. Users running the WhatsApp beta for Android versions such as 2.25.36.11 and the newer 2.26.1.28 update from the Google Play Store may see a new option while adding participants to a group. This option allows recent messages to be shared automatically with the new member, once permission is given.

WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Share Recent Group Chat History with New Members

For a long time, one of the biggest challenges in WhatsApp group chats was the lack of context for people who joined late. New members often felt confused because they could not see previous discussions. As a result, they had to ask others to explain what was going on, which sometimes disrupted ongoing conversations. This new feature solves that problem by giving new members immediate access to recent messages, helping them feel included right away.

WhatsApp has kept the feature focused and controlled. Only recent messages are shared, not the entire chat history. A maximum of 100 messages can be included, and these messages are selected based on activity from the last 14 days. If a group has fewer messages during that time, only those messages will be shared. Older messages outside this period are automatically excluded, ensuring that new members are not overwhelmed with outdated or unnecessary information.

The process is simple. When adding a new member, users will see the option to share recent chat history if the feature is available on their account. They can view the number of messages that will be shared before confirming. It is even possible to stop the process before completing the addition if the user only wants to check whether the feature is active.

To maintain transparency, messages shared with new members appear in a different color, making them easy to identify. All group participants also receive a notification confirming that recent messages have been shared. Importantly, WhatsApp continues to apply end-to-end encryption, meaning the shared messages are re-encrypted specifically for the new members. This ensures that privacy and security remain fully protected.

By default, the feature is turned off. Users must manually enable it each time they add someone new. To prevent accidental sharing, WhatsApp also shows a confirmation prompt the first three times the feature is used. After that, the prompt disappears, but the option remains disabled unless chosen again.

Currently, this feature is only available to some beta testers, as WhatsApp is testing it in stages. Once testing is complete, it is expected to roll out to more users. This feature will make group chats more welcoming and easier to follow for everyone.
