WhatsApp Users May Have a New Way to Check If They’re Blocked

Many WhatsApp users have experienced the same question at some point: “Have I been blocked?” When messages remain unread, profile photos disappear, or a contact’s last seen status is no longer visible, people often start looking for clues. However, these signs are not always reliable because users can change their privacy settings at any time.

Now, a newly discovered WhatsApp feature could make it easier to identify whether someone has blocked you, without having to send a message or make a call.

According to reports from WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, a tool originally designed for security purposes may also provide hints about a user’s status in a chat. The feature is linked to WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption system, which protects conversations from being accessed by anyone other than the sender and receiver.

The feature can be found within a contact’s information page. To access it, users need to open a chat, tap on the contact’s name, and then select the “Encryption” option. WhatsApp will then automatically verify whether the conversation is protected by end-to-end encryption.

Under normal circumstances, the verification process is completed successfully within a few moments. However, WABetaInfo reports that in some cases where a user has been blocked, the verification process repeatedly fails and WhatsApp may suggest using alternative verification methods instead.

While this behavior does not directly confirm that someone has blocked you, it could act as a useful indicator that something unusual is happening with the connection between the two accounts.

One of the most interesting aspects of this method is that it works quietly. Unlike sending a message, making a voice call, or attempting a video call, checking the encryption status does not notify the other person. This allows users to investigate the situation privately without drawing attention to themselves.

For years, people have relied on indirect signs to determine whether they were blocked on WhatsApp. Common clues include a single gray checkmark on sent messages, an absent profile picture, or the inability to view status updates. However, each of these signs can have other explanations. A user may have poor internet connectivity, disabled profile photo visibility, or adjusted their privacy settings.
