WhatsApp Will Soon Let Users Customize Emoji Reactions on Android

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will let users customize the emojis that appear in the message reaction tray on Android. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently under development and is expected to become part of the upcoming WhatsApp Plus subscription features.
At present, WhatsApp allows users to react to messages by pressing and holding a message. The app displays six default emojis that users can select instantly. If they want to use a different emoji, they must tap the “+” button to open the full emoji keyboard.

The new feature aims to make this process faster and more personal. Instead of relying on WhatsApp’s default selection, users will be able to replace the six reaction emojis with the ones they use most often.
WABetaInfo spotted the feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.29.3 update. Although it appears in the latest beta version, it is still under development and is not yet available for beta testers.
Once released, WhatsApp will add a dedicated settings section where users can manage their reaction tray. They will be able to tap any of the six default emoji slots and replace them with another emoji from the full emoji library. Users can change one, several, or all six emojis and update them whenever they like.
The feature will improve the messaging experience by giving users quicker access to their favorite reactions. For example, people who mainly use WhatsApp for work may prefer professional or neutral emojis, while those who mostly chat with family and friends may choose more expressive ones. A customizable reaction tray will allow users to tailor the shortcuts to their communication style.
According to the report, WhatsApp plans to offer this feature as part of WhatsApp Plus, the company’s optional premium subscription. The service already includes several personalization features such as custom themes, app icons, exclusive sticker packs, and the ability to pin up to 20 chats. Custom emoji reactions are expected to become one of the next premium additions.

The upcoming feature aligns with WhatsApp Plus’ focus on giving subscribers greater control over the app’s appearance and functionality. By allowing users to choose their preferred reaction emojis, WhatsApp aims to reduce the need to open the full emoji keyboard every time they want to use a different reaction.
For users who frequently react to messages, the feature could save time and make conversations more convenient. Instead of scrolling through the emoji library, they will have instant access to the reactions they use most.
WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will become available for beta testing or when it will roll out to all eligible users. For now, custom emoji reactions remain under development for Android, with more details expected in future updates.
