Windows 11 26H2 Is Here: 5 Ways to Download and Install the 2026 Update Today
Microsoft has started the rollout of Windows 11 26H2, and you can get it through Windows Update, the Installation Assistant, an ISO, the Media Creation Tool, or Rufus.

Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows 11 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, and it is now reaching PCs through several official channels. The Windows 11 26H2 download and install process works through Windows Update, the Installation Assistant, an ISO file, the Media Creation Tool, or Rufus.
Which method suits a given PC depends on what Windows Update currently shows, how much control the user wants, and whether the hardware meets Microsoft’s requirements.
What 26H2 actually is
John Cable, Microsoft’s Vice President of Product Management for Windows Servicing and Delivery, described 26H2 as built on the same servicing foundation as recent Windows 11 releases. It delivers current Windows features through what he called a streamlined update experience designed to limit disruption.
In practice, 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same underlying code. The update mostly switches on features already sitting dormant on the PC rather than installing something new. That is why the update through Windows Update can be as small as 174 KB for eligible machines, since it is an enablement package rather than a full download.
Before installing, check three things
An upgrade keeps apps, files and settings. A clean install wipes the drive and starts over. Installation media lets someone install Windows on another PC or keep a bootable USB or ISO on hand.
Anyone unsure whether their PC can run Windows 11 can check with Microsoft’s PC Health Check app before choosing a method. Backing up files first is also worth doing, since a clean install can erase everything on the drive.
| Method | Best for | Keeps files and apps? | Needs USB? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Normal upgrade | Yes | No |
| Installation Assistant | Upgrading now, before Windows Update offers 26H2 | Yes | No |
| ISO | Upgrade or clean install | Depends | Optional |
| Media Creation Tool | Clean install or another PC | Depends | Yes |
| Rufus | Custom USB, unsupported PC, special setup | Depends | Yes |
Method 1: Windows Update
This is Microsoft’s preferred route and the fastest for PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2. Cable said installation resembles a monthly update, needing only a small download and a quick restart.
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Select Check for updates.
- When “Windows 11, version 26H2” appears, select Download and install.
- Restart when prompted.
To confirm the update landed, press Win + R, type winver, and check for “Windows 11, version 26H2”. If 26H2 does not appear yet, that is normal. Microsoft rolls feature updates out in phases and can place safeguard holds on PCs with known compatibility issues until a fix is ready.
Method 2: Installation Assistant
If Windows Update has not offered 26H2, the Installation Assistant can upgrade the current PC directly. Before running it, the PC needs a valid Windows 10 or 11 license, Windows 10 version 2004 or later, at least 9GB of free space, and an x64 processor, since the tool does not run on Arm-based PCs.
- Run PC Health Check to confirm eligibility.
- Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s download page.
- Run it as administrator, accept the license terms, and let it download and install 26H2.
- Expect a few restarts and a forced reboot roughly 30 minutes after installation finishes, so save work beforehand.
Unlike Windows Update, the Assistant downloads a full copy of Windows, so it takes longer. It also does not create installation media for later use. Forcing an upgrade this way can bring along the same issue Windows Update may have been withholding it for.
Method 3: ISO file
The ISO offers the most control, and it works for either an upgrade or a clean install.
Upgrade without losing files:
- Download the official Windows 11 26H2 ISO, right-click it, and select Mount.
- Run setup.exe from the mounted drive.
- Accept the license terms.
- On “Ready to install”, select Change what to keep, and confirm Keep personal files and apps.
- Click Install.
Clean install:
Mount the ISO and choose Keep nothing to wipe personal data, settings and apps. For repartitioning or installing on a blank disc, a bootable USB is needed instead of a mounted ISO.
Method 4: Media Creation Tool
This is Microsoft’s official way to build a bootable USB, and it downloads Windows automatically.
- Download Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s site and run it as administrator.
- Accept the license terms and choose the language and edition.
- Select a USB flash drive, connect a blank drive with at least 8 GB of space, and let the tool build the media.
- Restart the target PC and boot from the USB.
The tool only creates media for x64 processors; Arm-based PCs need a separate Arm64 ISO. It suits situations where the target PC will not boot or where an official bootable USB is preferred over a third-party tool.
Method 5: Rufus
Rufus is a free, open-source tool that turns a Windows ISO into bootable media with options Microsoft’s own tools do not offer.
- Download the Windows 11 26H2 ISO and the latest version of Rufus.
- Connect a USB drive of 8GB or more, open Rufus, and select the drive.
- Choose the ISO, leave the partition scheme as GPT and target system as UEFI, and click Start.
- In the Windows User Experience window, select any bypass options needed, then let Rufus build the USB.
Rufus can remove the requirements for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, skip the online Microsoft account requirement, and disable automatic BitLocker encryption. These bypasses were tested on 25H2 and are expected to work similarly on 26H2, though Microsoft periodically changes Windows Setup, so a bypass working today is not guaranteed to keep working. Rufus cannot help PCs whose processor lacks the POPCNT instruction, a requirement for 24H2 and later, since those machines cannot boot the installer regardless of settings.
Running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware
It is possible on some PCs, but Microsoft does not recommend it. The company’s download page warns of possible compatibility issues, and unsupported PCs are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. Microsoft has been especially firm about TPM 2.0, calling it non-negotiable for upgrades from Windows 10.
Anyone going this route should expect possible app and device compatibility problems, missing hardware security features, driver issues on older laptops, and no guarantee that a future update will not close the workaround entirely.
Local account without a Microsoft account
This keeps changing across builds. In October 2025, Microsoft began removing known ways to create a local account during setup, including the oobe\bypassnro command, saying it skipped screens that leave devices under-configured. As of the latest builds, clicking “Learn more” on the Microsoft account sign-in screen has, in some cases, still led to a local-account option, but this is not consistent across every ISO. Rufus’s local-account bypass remains the more reliable route for anyone who wants to avoid this uncertainty.
What changes with 26H2?
The version number increase does not switch on every new feature by itself. Microsoft controls rollout through what it calls Controlled Feature Rollout, and updating to 26H2 mainly improves the odds of receiving features already delivered through recent monthly updates. None of the headline changes are exclusive to 26H2.
The notable ones include a movable taskbar that can sit on the left, top, right or bottom; a resizable Start menu with Small, Large and Automatic sizing; and a faster, Bing-free Search that lets users turn off web and Microsoft Store suggestions. For managed and enterprise devices, 26H2 turns on settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and some File Explorer improvements by default and enables point-in-time restore on certain managed PCs.
The bigger change is the support lifecycle. Enterprise and Education editions get 36 months of servicing from September 29, 2026, while Home and Pro editions get the usual 24 months.
