X Begins Rolling Out New ‘Chat’ App With Encrypted Messaging and Video Calls

X has begun rolling out its long-awaited standalone chat application, replacing the service’s basic Direct Messages (DM) tool with a more advanced and privacy-focused messaging experience.
The new Chat app, now available on iOS and the web, brings several modern communication features, including voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing, and the ability to delete sent messages. An Android version is expected to launch soon.
According to X, the platform now supports end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) conversations, allowing users to send disappearing messages and block screenshots. A voice memo feature is also under testing, enabling the sending of prerecorded audio clips.
However, the company acknowledged that the encryption system is still evolving. X stated that the current version does not yet protect against man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, meaning a malicious insider—or even X itself under legal obligation—could theoretically intercept an encrypted chat without the users being notified.
“Both senders and recipients should be alerted in the event of an attack,” the company said, adding that a verification mechanism is under development to address this security gap.
The launch of the Chat app marks X’s latest effort to broaden its functionality and position itself as a multi-purpose communication platform. The company claims that the service will offer no advertisements, no tracking, and complete user privacy as part of its long-term vision for secure digital interaction.
