Xiaomi Unveils Sky Nomad, Signaling a Major Step into the EREV SUV Market

Xiaomi has officially introduced the name Sky Nomad, marking an important development in its electric vehicle business. The announcement was made through Xiaomi EV’s official Weibo account, where the company described Sky Nomad as “a new name about space and life.” Although Xiaomi confirmed the name, it has not yet revealed whether Sky Nomad will become a separate brand or simply a new product series within its existing EV lineup.

The announcement follows months of speculation about Xiaomi’s plans to expand beyond its current battery electric vehicles. Industry reports suggest that Xiaomi will use the Sky Nomad name for its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV), which will compete in China’s growing family SUV market.

Unlike fully electric vehicles, EREVs use a small gasoline engine to recharge the battery when needed. This setup helps reduce range anxiety while allowing drivers to enjoy the benefits of electric driving for most daily trips. The technology has become increasingly popular in China, especially among buyers looking for large family SUVs that can travel long distances.

According to recent reports, the first Sky Nomad model will be a full-size SUV with an internal codename of Kunlun N3. The vehicle will measure more than 5.3 meters in length, making it one of Xiaomi’s largest vehicles to date. The SUV will feature a battery larger than 70 kWh and deliver an electric-only driving range of around 400 to 500 kilometers before the range extender activates

The SUV will be available in both five-seat and seven-seat versions. Early information suggests it will feature a bold, boxy design with rugged styling and semi-hidden door handles. The larger seven-seat version may also include a built-in rooftop tent that can be deployed through a roof-lifting mechanism, making it attractive for camping and outdoor travel.

Battery supply for the new vehicle will come from Sunwoda and CALB, with both companies sharing production responsibilities. This partnership could help Xiaomi secure enough battery capacity as it continues to increase vehicle production.

Sky Nomad will compete directly with popular extended-range SUVs from brands such as Li Auto and Huawei-backed Aito. Reports indicate that Xiaomi aims to offer competitive pricing, with entry-level models possibly starting at around 200,000 yuan. This would make the vehicle more affordable than many existing premium EREV SUVs while still offering spacious interiors and advanced technology.

Xiaomi has already received regulatory approval to manufacture extended-range electric passenger vehicles at its Beijing production facility. This approval allows the company to move beyond its existing battery electric models, including the SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV, and expand into a new market segment.

The launch of Sky Nomad will play a key role in Xiaomi’s growth strategy for 2026. The company has set an ambitious delivery target of 550,000 vehicles for the year, representing a significant increase compared to its 2025 performance. Xiaomi has also maintained strong sales momentum, recording more than 30,000 vehicle deliveries for three consecutive months.

While many details about Sky Nomad remain unconfirmed, Xiaomi’s official announcement shows the company is preparing for its next phase of expansion. If the reported specifications and pricing prove accurate, Sky Nomad could become an important competitor in China’s rapidly growing family SUV market and strengthen Xiaomi’s position in the electric vehicle industry.
