YouTube Tests Built-In Direct Messaging Inside the App

YouTube has begun testing a long-requested feature: direct messaging inside the YouTube mobile app. The new tool is currently available only to signed-in users aged 18 and above in Poland and Ireland.

The test introduces a dedicated chat screen within YouTube, allowing users to share long-form videos, Shorts, and livestreams directly into private message threads. They can discuss content in real time or invite more friends to join the conversation. Sharing works seamlessly through the standard “Share” button.

This experiment follows other recent social-focused additions on the platform, including Playables (YouTube’s multiplayer game feature) and live sharing via Google Meet for Premium users.

The End of “Copy Link → Switch App → Paste”?

For years, YouTube has lacked a built-in way to discuss videos with friends. As a result, users have had to switch to third-party apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram just to share a link and chat about it.

By testing direct messaging, YouTube is signaling a broader ambition: it wants to evolve from a pure video-watching platform into a more social, interactive space. If the feature expands globally, it could dramatically change how people share content and communicate around it.

Why This Could Change How You Share Videos Forever

If YouTube rolls this out worldwide, the user experience could become far more convenient. Benefits may include:

  • Faster sharing without leaving the app
  • More natural group conversations around videos, Shorts, or livestreams
  • Less dependence on external messaging apps
  • A centralized communication hub built directly into YouTube

Overall, the feature could make video-driven conversations smoother and more immediate.

A More Social YouTube Experience?

YouTube says this is an early test, and future expansion depends on how users in Poland and Ireland respond. If feedback is positive, the company may extend the feature globally, add more controls, and integrate it further with other social tools like Playables and Meet live sharing.

A full rollout could quietly shift the video streaming platform toward a more conversation-centric platform, blending video viewing and social interaction in one place.
