Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Confirms No Baldur’s Gate 4, Teases Two New Projects

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has confirmed that there won’t be a Baldur’s Gate 4 in the works. However, fans of the studio’s work can look forward to two new projects currently in development.

In a recent community update on Steam, Larian Studios announced, “We won’t be introducing any major new narrative content to the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) or its origin characters and companions, nor will we be making expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4. We’re currently working on two new projects and we couldn’t be more excited about what the future has in store.”

While details about the new projects are scarce, Larian Studios promised to share more news “later down the line.” They did, however, provide a hint about the style of these new games, stating, “Know that even as our focus turns to these new games, the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well here at the Larian castle. I don’t know if we’re going to pull it off, but looking at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received widespread acclaim for its expansive world, rich character development, challenging puzzles, engaging combat, faithfulness to the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) rules, and its portrayal of intimate relationships. The game surpassed expectations by selling around 15 million copies and garnered numerous awards over the past year, including Game of the Year prizes at The Game Awards, The Steam Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards, Streamer Awards, Hugo Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, and more.

Director Swen Vincke previously revealed that plans for Baldur’s Gate 3 downloadable content (DLC) and a sequel were dropped, partly due to limitations imposed by the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition mechanics. Despite this, there’s no doubt that the Baldur’s Gate franchise holds a special place in the hearts of gamers. Vincke expressed, “We’ve done our job. It’s a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. So let’s pass the torch to another studio to pick up this incredible legacy.”
