Threads Will Now Filter Out Offensive Words From Your Feeds

Similar to Instagram, Threads will now filter out the potentially offensive words, phrases, or emojis as a default setting. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced the introduction of the Hidden Words feature in a recent post. This feature applies to both the “Following” and “For You” feeds, search results, profiles, and replies to your posts.

If you wish to broaden or customize the content filtered by Threads, you have the option to manually add specific words, phrases, or emojis to be hidden by adjusting the settings within the app. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, highlights that users have the flexibility to toggle the Hidden Words feature on or off at their convenience. Instagram initially introduced the ability for users to filter out abusive language from comments in 2016, later expanding this feature to direct messages (DMs).

Threads is also experimenting with muting notifications for interactions with your posts. A screenshot shared by Meta illustrates that users can toggle notifications on or off by selecting the bell icon in the top-right corner of a post. Furthermore, the platform is testing a feature that enables users to control who can quote their posts, with an option to unquote oneself if desired.

Similarly, on X, users have the option to filter sensitive content and mute specific words or phrases on the platform. X also provides features to restrict who can reply to your posts.

These newly introduced features complement Threads’ existing controls, such as the ability to select who can reply to a thread and who can mention you in their threads, replies, or bio. Additionally, the platform is exploring a feature that allows users to automatically archive their posts, giving them the ability to hide older content from their profile.

Just recently, Meta has let users decide to see less politics-related content on Instagram and Threads. According to Meta, the new option will serve as a measure. It will not proactively recommend political content from accounts you don’t follow. It is pertinent to mention here that the new toggle will be enabled by default. However, users can manually opt if they want to see political content on their timeline or not. If enabled, Instagram and Threads will only show political content from accounts you follow.
