iPhone 15 Pro Becomes The ‘Sales Champion’ of Spring 2024

The vanilla iPhone came with more changes this year than it did last year. However, its evolution falls short of what Apple brings to the Pro line. It boasts the same new shape and USB-C port as the iPhone 15 Pro, however, keeps the materials and everything else the same. Since the launch of Apple’s iPhone 15 series, the second full quarter has shown a significant shift in consumer buying habits, especially affecting the base iPhone 15 model. The transition in consumer preferences is a pivotal factor in the declining popularity of the base model. On the other hand, the Pro models have shown a stable performance. iPhone 15 Pro unexpectedly becomes the sales champion of Spring this year.

iPhone 15 Pro Continues To Dominate Sales

The latest flagship iPhone series continues to dominate sales. There’s a prominent decline in the market share held by the base model compared to its predecessors. According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the iPhone 15 vanilla model accounts for only 14% of total iPhone sales this quarter. It shows a significant decrease from the 19% held by the iPhone 14 vanilla model during the same quarter in 2023.

Despite the base model’s downfall, the iPhone 15 series strives to be a huge success. The highly anticipated series accounts for a significant 68% of total iPhone sales. The higher-end Pro and Pro Max models, in particular, have shown a steady performance, maintaining a stable share of 22% to 23% of total sales. Let’s have a look at the report:

Reason Behind Base Model’s Declining Popularity

Several factors are responsible for the base model’s declining popularity. The gradual improvements in iPhone technology have become less groundbreaking over the years. It makes the latest vanilla models less attractive. Despite new features like the Dynamic Island, a 48MP main camera, and USB-C integration in the iPhone 15 series, these updates especially for the vanilla model — aren’t considered as big leaps forward.

Moreover, the integration of USB-C in the base iPhone 15 model is restrained to USB 2.0 speeds. It doesn’t improve data transfer rates compared to older models that used the Lightning connector. The overall market response shows a different scenario. The iPhone 15 series has helped Apple bolster robust sales. However, consumers are seen opting for either older iPhone models or investing in the higher-spec Pro models. CIRP ponders:

“We also suspect some economic pressure to reduce spending, when possible, and a generational trend toward sustainability and away from always wanting the newest thing. Together these factors put pressure on the newest base model and pumped-up demand for the one- and two-year-old alternatives.”

The high-end models still tempt people looking for the latest and greatest, but the base iPhone 15’s lagging sales shows Apple should reevaluate its approach to the entry-level market segment.
