Motorola Moving towards Innovation as they Unveil Adaptive Display Concept Phones Again

Motorola unveiled a number of unique concepts at Lenovo Tech World ’23, some of which might never reach production. Since 2014, the smartphone manufacturer has revealed a prototype of an “adaptive display” that can be folded into a phone, stand, or smart bracelet. The new concept appears to be an improved variant of the same prototype that Lenovo showcased in 2016. Additionally, the company highlighted a number of AI-powered development features for Lenovo devices that are already available for purchase.

The display concept is an FHD+ pOLED smartphone that is rollable. “Depending on the needs of the user, the prototype can be bent and shaped into various forms,” the company wrote in its announcement blog post. The device can be folded to a degree and extended to function as a conventional smartphone; alternatively, it can be bent in half to accommodate a desk (similar to foldable phones). Even a partial wrap around the wrist is sufficient to observe the concept device transform into something resembling an intelligent strike bracelet.

An advertisement from Motorola features a phone that can be bent or rolled. The device is positioned on a table, with its curved top extending upwards in the manner of a smart display, while its bottom functions as a base. The conceptual prototype operates “a full Android experience, just like any smartphone” (with the exception of iPhones), and features a 6.9-inch display. It transitions to a streamlined version of Android on a 4.6-inch segment of its display when in stand mode.

While it may be entertaining to admire futuristic concepts, we do not advise anticipating the imminent release of this device as a consumer product. Who knows? However, Lenovo has repeatedly shown that it is not hesitant to send out consumer products in an unconventional manner.

In 2023, corporations will implement AI-powered concepts, so Motorola unveiled a number of such concepts alongside its flexible prototype. “With this concept, users can upload or capture a picture of their outfit to produce multiple unique AI-generated images that reflect their style,” the company wrote.

After that, you may set those AI-generated pictures as unique wallpapers for your device. The individual uses the rollable display device in a video that the firm posted on their blog to take a picture of their clothes, which the software then converts into a range of wallpaper selections for the flexible phone.

The business also said that it is developing a large language model (LLM)-based personal voice and text assistant for PCs and smartphones. The business claims that the assistant, known as MotoAI, can “answer questions, draft messages, schedule tasks, and so much more.” MotoAI would prioritize local task execution, data processing, and privacy above cloud-based services. According to the company, as the tool gains more knowledge about you, it may be able to individually customize your device.

Motorola also addressed the issue of document scanning, hinting at a function that can reduce wrinkles and shadows when using a phone’s camera to scan paper documents or actual photos. “This innovation aims to improve final image quality by minimizing wrinkles and shadows to ensure documents or images appear as crisp and clear as possible,” the company wrote.
