Since the rollout of 3G and 4G technology in 2014, the mobile phone and MBB adoption in Pakistan has increased rapidly which created a huge demand for smartphones. IDC’s report of Q1 2017 showed massive year on year growth of 27.6%. A senior analyst at IDC even compared this growth with developed markets. Pakistan has also managed to catch up with the international tech revolution. Pakistani market mainly comprises of a younger generation who is well-aware of all the modern technological trends. This market segment wants smartphones with 3G and 4G connectivity with all the other latest features at an affordable price. To use all the latest features and applications, consumers’ are moving towards 4G-enabled handsets; shipments of these devices has grown to 189% year on year in Q1 2017.

Due to such encouraging growth trends, many new smartphone brands have entered the Pakistani market over the years. According to IDC, currently, Qmobile continues to dominate the overall smartphones market with 54.9% in Q1 2017, while Samsung came second with a market share of 19.1%.

Huawei with 6.1%, and Oppo with 5.2% market share also secured a place in top brands list.

The newly emerging brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Infinix, and OPPO are offering smartphones with great specs at more affordable prices to customers in Pakistan. Since Pakistan is a price sensitive market, the proportion of low-cost smartphones in Pakistan continues to grow. It has been estimated that almost 50%of all smartphones shipped to the market priced below $100 earlier this year.
