Google Maps For Android Is Prepping For A Revamped Interface

The Google Maps UI has remained unchanged for the past several years. According to the latest reports, the user interface will change with significant redesigns across key surfaces, including when searching for directions. Google Maps on Android is working on a potential full rollout. We will see a redesigned interface with key changes based on user feedback. The overhauled design will offer a smoother navigation experience by placing the map at the forefront. Google has replaced many formerly fullscreen information panels with smaller, translucent windows. It allows users to see a part of the map in the background while browsing details, providing important context.

Google Maps UI Is Getting A Significant Overhaul

There are some prominent changes the search giant will bring to the Google Maps. Let’s dig into them:

A New Sheet Design

For beginners, tapping a place will reveal a new sheet design. It will feature close and share buttons in the top-right corner. Moreover, there will also be a background sheet just behind the one you’re interacting with.

No Longer Fullscreen

Another noteworthy change will be no longer fullscreen. Google will replace it with smaller translucent windows revealing a fraction of the map background at the top. This sheet approach will help preserve context.

Improved Direction Search Experience

The most significant redesign in Google Maps will be the directions search experience. At the top, the UI will no longer go edge-to-edge. It will only be for entering addresses making everything less cluttered.

Enhanced Reachability on Mobile

Google will move the carousel of different transportation methods to the bottom. It will be a nice reachability improvement on mobile. Swiping up will reveal that this is no longer a fullscreen UI. It will allow you to use the map in more navigation methods, like public transport.

All the changes will make the Google Maps interface less crowded. Currently, these changes are appearing to a limited group of people. It seems to be in the testing phase on Android (version 11.113.x). The new UI is not yet widely rolled out but aims to make its way to all users quite soon. Let’s wait and watch when it rolls out to all users. Stay tuned!
