Pakistan Clarifies Rumors of a Complete Ban on Social Media Platform X

There have been recent rumours circulating on social media platforms claiming that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is considering a complete ban on X (formerly Twitter). However, the PTA has officially refuted these claims, clarifying that there is no such recommendation for a permanent ban.

While X has been temporarily inaccessible in Pakistan since February 17, 2024, the PTA has emphasized that this is a temporary measure pending a review of the platform’s compliance with Pakistani laws.

Pakistan Clarifies Rumors of a Complete Ban on Social Media Platform X

Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

  • Rumours of a Complete Ban: Social media reports suggested that the PTA, along with law enforcement agencies, had recommended a permanent ban on X due to its alleged non-compliance with Pakistani laws.
  • PTA’s Official Statement: The PTA has released a statement explicitly denying these reports, stating that “the news circulating about PTA recommending a complete ban on X is baseless and untrue.” They have not initiated any discussions with the Ministry of Interior or any other institution regarding a permanent ban.
  • Reason for Temporary Suspension: The temporary suspension stems from X’s alleged failure to adhere to lawful directives issued by the Pakistani government.
  • Interior Ministry’s Report: The Interior Ministry submitted a report to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) justifying the ban. The report highlights X’s non-compliance with government directives and its failure to address concerns regarding the misuse of its platform.
  • Specific Instances of Non-Cooperation: The report cites instances where X officials disregarded requests from the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cybercrime Wing. One such instance involved a request to ban accounts promoting content against the Chief Justice.
  • National Security Concerns: The report emphasizes that the temporary shutdown was implemented at the request of intelligence agencies to safeguard national security and maintain law and order.

Just recently, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that he was not in favour of banning any social media platform.

Moreover, he asked why the social media platforms did not open any sub-office in Pakistan, although the government took steps to facilitate them. He said that social media companies should set up their offices in Pakistan like they did in other countries of the world.

Therefore, while X remains inaccessible in Pakistan for now, it’s crucial to understand that this is a temporary measure and there is no official recommendation for a complete ban. The PTA is currently reviewing X’s compliance with Pakistani laws, and a decision regarding the platform’s accessibility will be made based on the outcome of this review.
