Finally! You Can Now Make Audio & Video Calls on X/Twitter
X (formerly known as Twitter) is finally rolling out the ability to make and receive audio and video calls. It was a much-requested feature. The good news is that the feature has finally made its way to several users. Reports claim that many users have received a pop-up notification about the new feature after opening the X app in the past few hours. It is pertinent to mention that the platform hinted at the imminent rollout of audio and video calls a few hours back. However, it hasn’t officially introduced the features through its own X account or a press release.
X Rolls Out Early Version Of Audio & Video Calling
The highly requested feature to make and receive audio and video calls is rolling out to users currently. However, it is still unclear if non-Premium X subscribers will have access to audio and video calling. The platform has released an early version of the feature and promises to refine it with time. Here’s what Elon Musk says about the feature:
“This is an early version of video and audio calling on X. The features could be refined with time.”
In addition, there is also a new “Enable audio and video calling” toggle within the app’s settings. It allows you to “turn the feature on and then select who you’re comfortable using it with.” It includes options for audio and video calls from:
- Only people in your address book
- People you follow
- Verified users
- All three
How To Make Audio & Video Calls On X?
You can easily make a call by opening a DM with another user. You will have to only select the phone icon in the top right corner of the screen and choose audio or video call. Here are the basic steps:
- Open the X app
- Tap on your profile picture at the top
- Tap Settings and privacy
- Choose the Privacy and safety menu
- Tap the Direct Messages option
- Change the audio and video calling options as you desire
As already mentioned above, X hasn’t officially announced its launch. The company seemed to tease it with a cryptic post saying “Ready for it…?” shortly before it began appearing. However, X owner Elon Musk has been hinting at adding audio and video calls to the platform to make it the “everything app” for a long time. Elon Musk claims that the feature would be available on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, with “no phone number needed.”
We still don’t know how widely X has launched audio and video calls or if non-Premium users can use it. Previous reports claim that users will have to sign up for X’s Premium subscription to use it. Musk even mentioned charging all users a yearly price to access the platform. The announcement was another addition to the growing list of unpopular decisions taken by Elon about the social media platform. Moreover, the platform has already started making users in New Zealand and the Phillippines pay $1 per year. So, let’s see what comes next.
