Pakistan remains a largely under-served market in terms of digital access and digital payment. With a unique mobile subscriber penetration of 31%, mobile broadband penetration of 5% and bank/mobile money account penetration among adults of 13%, Pakistan still has a lot of room for growth. For that reason GSMA in collaboration with Mobilink organizes an event on “Digital Societies Making Commerce Smarter” and “GSMA Asia & Cellular Mobile Operators of Pakistan”. The event was attended by all the industry’s telecom professionals of Pakistan i.e. Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor, Zong and Warid.
The main agenda of the event was to bring forward the ways through which Pakistan can match the digital societies criteria as it was already huge potential to grow further. Minister of state for IT and Telecom Anusha Rehman stated that:
“Pakistan is on its way to achieve huge milestone; as the mobile penetration has increased to a greater extent if we compare it to the 2014 penetration rate”.
PTA chairman Dr. Ismail Shah also addressed the audience and highlighted PTA’s concerns over the topic.
Deputy CEO Moblink, Amir Ibrahim said that:
“With increased smartphone adoption Pakistan will lead towards smarter digital societies.”
At the end of the event, Memento distribution ceremony was held.
