Ministry Promotes Local Mobile Manufacturing to Reduce the Import bill

Since the local manufacturing of mobile phones is almost at initial stages in Pakistan. Haier is only name which has taken an initiative to manufacture local mobile phones as well as smart phones. But the company has still to work a lot in making a feasible space in the market. To fulfill the demands and needs of required smartphones Government of Pakistan has increased its mobile phone imports.

Ministry Promotes Local Mobile Manufacturing to Reduce the Import bill

Mobile phone imports have increased by 6.25 percent during current financial year 2015-16 (July-March) as compared to same period of previous year. It means that the total imports of mobile phone stood at US $ 573.282 million while they were US $ 539.581 million in same period last year.

According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the import bill for mobile phones has increased with the arrival of 3G and 4G networks. Pakistan spends around US $ 600 million each year on import of mobile phones. The Ministry of IT is trying to fill the gap and decrease the import rate by promoting local manufacturing of mobile phones. They are involving international telephone manufacturing companies to work in Pakistan through Public Private Partnership. They are encouraged to manufacture as well as assemble the mobile phones.

For this matter Chinese mobile manufacturers are also playing an active role to initiate the local market. Hopefully Pakistan would soon establish a local mobile manufacturing market and decrease the imports.
