Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 May Use An Older Chipset

Samsung has been quiet about its foldable lineup for a while now. Recently, a new rumor surfaced online. It shed some light on the tech giant’s plans for the release of its next foldable phone. The rumor claims the Galaxy Z Flip 6 clamshell foldable phone may use an even older processor than expected. The smartphone was also spotted at a pair of GeekBench benchmarks. One listing reveals that the upcoming foldable phone will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the other hints at using a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 May Come With Two Different Chipset Configurations

There are a few possibilities that the upcoming phone can come with two different chipset configurations and codenames. For instance, Pineapple for the new silicon with 8GB of RAM and Kalama for the older with 12GB of RAM. Samsung has been trying out its new hardware with last year’s chip. However, it is also reportedly working to see if the older silicon is feasible with more RAM.

Samsung may release two Z Flip 6 series phones: a more powerful pro model with the new chipset and a lower-cost standard one with the old chipset. Smartphone makers have been using older silicon chipsets in new phones to reduce costs on some models. For instance,  Apple used the previous year’s A-series chips in the vanilla iPhone 15 and saved its latest chipset for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

Samsung seems to follow Motorola’s lead as it launched two Razr Plus phones. Motorola launched the Razr Plus, a $1,000 clamshell foldable with a large 3.6-inch outer display, and the Motorola Razr 2023, a $700 device with a smaller 1.5-inch outer display. Samsung may want to launch its own cheaper foldable to compete with its rivals.

It is pertinent to mention that it will not affect its performance if the Z Flip 6 uses a slightly older chipset. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a powerful chipset and achieves higher benchmarks than its seventh-generation and lower-silicon siblings. It can run some Galaxy AI features as well.
