Samsung Prepares for Mass Production of its First 3nm Exynos chip

Samsung has been working on its upcoming highly anticipated 3nm Exynos chipset these days. Samsung and Synopsys revealed in a press release that Samsung’s foundries are preparing for the mass production of the first 3nm Exynos chip. However, the press release isn’t explicitly clear about the Exynos part. Kijoon Hong, vice president of SLSI at Samsung Electronics stated:

“Our longstanding collaboration has delivered leading-edge SoC designs. This is a remarkable milestone to achieve the highest performance, power, and area on the most advanced mobile CPU cores and SoC designs in collaboration with Synopsys. Not only have we demonstrated that AI-driven solutions can help us achieve PPA targets for even the most advanced GAA process technologies, but through our partnership, we have established an ultra-high-productivity design system consistently delivering impressive results.”

Samsung Collaborates With Synopsys To Tune The Whole Manufacturing Process

The tech giant has collaborated with Synopsys. For all those unaware, it is a firm specializing in electronics design automation. Samsung wants to fine-tune the whole manufacturing process to maximize yields and improve the chip’s performance. The press release articulates that the two tech companies are in the final process of designing, called “taping out”. It means the final design of the highly anticipated 3nm chipset is being sent to the foundry so it can adjust the production lines for the mass production process.

It is pertinent to mention that the upcoming chipset will be Samsung’s first complex and high-performance chip based on the 3nm node using Samsung’s Gate All Around (GAA) process. Samsung’s foundries have already been fabricating 3nm chips since 2022, however, those are simple chips used for cryptocurrency mining. On the other hand, the SoCs used on mobile devices are more complex hardware elements demanding different design and manufacturing processes.

If everything pans out accordingly, Samsung’s foundries will start mass production of the next-generation SoC in a few months. However, whether the first 3nm chip will be the Exynos 2500 for the Galaxy S25 lineup or another SoC is still unknown. Reports claim that the Galaxy Watch7 which is just around the corner may get an upgrade with Samsung’s most recent hardware. So, let’s wait and watch what comes next. Will the close collaboration between Synopsys and Samsung deliver exceptional performance, power, and area (PPA) for mutual customers? Time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates.
