Uber Finally Exits Pakistan but with an Exciting News for Users

In a recent development, the popular ride-hailing service Uber shut down its business in Lahore and exited the Pakistani market. Back in 2022, the company announced its decision to end its operations in Islamabad, Karachi, Multan, and multiple other cities, however, it continued its operations in Lahore. Now, without any prior announcement, the ride-hailing service halted its services in the city.

While talking to a media outlet, a spokesperson from Uber said,

“We’ve made the decision to cease operating the Uber app in Pakistan. Our subsidiary brand Careem will continue to operate, with the Careem app offering ride-hailing services across Pakistan and earning opportunities for drivers. In October 2022, Uber ceased operating the Uber app in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar and Islamabad. The Uber app was only available in Lahore until today’s decision.”

Moreover, the spokesperson added that the decision to exit Pakistan is in parallel with Uber’s global growth strategy, which involves focusing on markets with opportunities for sustainable growth.

However, the company is trying to gain market share through Uber-owned Careem. This is evident through the current discount scheme. Careem users can use the code LHR50, and get a 50% discount on their next 5 rides.

There are customers who are worried about the cash in their Uber accounts. For them, the company clarified in an email statement that Uber will soon contact users to refund their money. However, it is unclear when Uber customers will get their refunds as the company only says it will happen “in due course.”

On the other hand, Careem will continue its normal operations in all cities including Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Quetta.
