TikTok to Label AI-Generated Content Soon

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has entered almost every sphere of the web. It has a lot of benefits, however, it can also lead to the creation of fake and misleading content. To curb it, the popular social video platform TikTok plans to start labeling images and videos that have been generated using AI, using a digital watermark called Content Credentials.

Researchers in the field have shown concerns that AI-generated content could be used to interfere with the upcoming US elections this fall. Pertinently, Tiktok was a part of 20 tech companies that signed an accord pledging to fight any interference.

The Head of operations and trust and safety, Adam Presser said,

“We also have policies that prohibit realistic AI that is not labeled, so if realistic AI (generated contents) appears on the platform, then we will remove it as violating our community guidelines.”

TikTok already labels AI-generated content made with in-app tools, however, the new measures would apply a label to videos and images generated outside the app.

Reportedly, YouTube and Instagram have also said they plan to use Content Credentials. For the system to function, both the creator of the generative AI and the platform used to distribute the content must agree to use the industry standard.

Chatgpt maker Open AI already uses Content Credentials technology. So, when a user uses OpenAI’s Dall-E tool to generate an image, the company attaches a watermark to the resulting image and adds data to the file.
