PPP’s Rabbani Concerned About Impact of NCCIA on Citizens Liberties

Expressing strong opposition, PPP senior leader Mian Raza Rabbani vehemently condemned the formation of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to address cyber crimes. Rabbani voiced concerns on Monday, expressing apprehension that the newly established probe agency could potentially infringe upon the personal liberties of citizens. The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing became inactive last week as the federal government introduced the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to investigate electronic crimes.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication officially notified the abolition of the FIA’s cybercrime wing. The government cited the exercise of powers conferred by section 51 read with section 29 of the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act, 2016, as the basis for this decision.

PPP leader Rabbani criticized the establishment of the NCCIA, expressing concern over its ambiguous and expansive mandate, which he believes could result in heightened surveillance and data gathering, ultimately infringing upon citizens’ liberties. He strongly condemned the abrupt creation of the NCCIA, emphasizing that it has emerged at a crucial juncture when safeguarding digital rights and privacy should be paramount concerns for the state.

PPP Leader Rabbani reiterated his stance, emphasizing that the establishment of the body occurred without consulting digital rights groups, the IT sector, or the public. He expressed deep concerns over the government’s decision. Additionally, Rabbani highlighted the government’s failure to engage with the public even after nearly a week since the creation of the NCCIA. He questioned what specific objectives the NCCIA aims to achieve that the FIA cannot, underscoring the need for transparency and public confidence in governmental actions. Rabbani called on the government to publicly justify the necessity of establishing the NCCIA and to provide assurance that its creation does not signify a form of social media policing.
