Gemini Nano is Finally Coming to the Pixel 8

Google initially decided not to bring Gemini Nano to its newest flagship. The feature was exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, which led to some users accusing Google of violating its update policy. However, in a surprising turn of events, Google has announced that Gemini Nano will indeed be available for the Pixel 8 before the start of summer.

This change of heart comes after Google confirmed that it will bring its on-device Large Language Model (LLM) to its smaller 2023 flagship. Initially, Google had stated otherwise in an episode of The Android Show released earlier this month. Gemini Nano will be available as a developer preview, likely accessible through developer settings, similar to its initial release on the Pro model. This update will enable support for Recorder’s auto-summaries and Smart Reply in Gboard.

Gemini Nano is Finally Coming to the Pixel 8

Google did not explain the reason behind the initial decision to exclude the Pixel 8 from receiving Gemini Nano during The Android Show episode. However, it is speculated that it was due to memory constraints. The Pixel 8 has 8GB of RAM, while the Pixel 8 Pro has 12GB. Interestingly, the Galaxy S24 series, which supports Gemini Nano, also has a model with 8GB of RAM. Google addressed this memory concern in its recent statement, emphasizing the importance of optimizing large language models for different memory specifications.

Google’s decision to bring Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8 is exciting news for users and developers alike. The upcoming Pixel Feature Drop, expected in June, may include Gemini Nano. Google has promised more details in an episode of the Made by Google podcast featuring Seang Chau, VP of Engineering. Additionally, with Google I/O approaching, we may see new on-device applications for Gemini Nano soon.

In conclusion, Google’s decision to include Gemini Nano in the Pixel 8 is a welcome change for users, especially with the anticipation of the Pixel 9 launch later this year. With Gemini Nano’s expanded availability, Pixel 8 users can look forward to enhanced AI capabilities on their devices.
