Images of New Xbox Series X Model Leak Online

A series of leaked images may have given the Xbox Series X community a glimpse of the new console that Microsoft could soon launch. In the video game industry, the concept of a “mid-generation refresh” has been common, allowing hardware producers to update their devices with modern technology without calling it the “next generation.” There have been rumours for several months that both Sony and Microsoft will release updated versions of their consoles in 2024, and these leaked images may have confirmed those suspicions.

Originally posted on eXputer and later verified by The Verge, the images reveal a white Xbox Series X without a disc drive, making it a fully digital platform. While the pictures somewhat pixelated, they correspond to certain documents detailing Microsoft’s next console. Apart from the colour change and the absence of a disc drive, the rest of the console appears to be identical to the current Series X. It is likely to feature upgraded internals, typical of a mid-generation refresh.

It’s important to note that Microsoft has not yet confirmed the authenticity of these images or the existence of an upgraded Xbox Series X. Nevertheless, the community is already compiling a list of desired features for an upgraded console, including an expanded SSD and a power-delivering USB-C port. While it’s uncertain if the next iteration will include these features, reports suggest that Microsoft plans to increase the internal 1TB SSD to 2 TB.

Leaked documents have also hinted at an improved controller accompanying the upgraded Series X. The controller, featuring haptic feedback and an accelerometer, is split into black and white halves, offering a more immersive experience akin to Sony’s DualSense controller. It remains unknown whether this controller will release in 2024, but given that the current console generation is halfway through its lifecycle, it seems probable.

While an upgraded Xbox Series X will be exciting for enthusiasts, many are hoping that Microsoft will address the Xbox Series S, its smaller, cheaper, and less powerful alternative. Some argue that the weaker hardware of the Series S has made it challenging for Microsoft to produce quality next-gen games, as developers need to cater to two vastly different hardware specifications. If a console revamp is indeed in the works, the Series S may benefit more than its larger counterpart. Fans will have to wait and see if this becomes a reality.
