Kirin 9010 Chipset Fails to Beat Mid-Range SoCs in Benchmark Tests

Huawei has rekindled its focus on developing in-house Kirin chipsets with the introduction of the Pura70 series. At the heart of this lineup lies the Kirin 9010, marking a significant return to proprietary chipset designs. However, recent benchmark tests on the Pura70 Ultra, powered by the Kirin 9010, have revealed some underwhelming performance figures.

Taking a closer look at the numbers from Geekbench 6, the Kirin 9010 inside the Pura70 Ultra managed to achieve a single-core score of 1,446 and a multi-core score of 4,524. These scores, when compared to the latest chipsets such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300, fall notably short. Surprisingly, they also lag behind older flagship chipsets and even mid-range chipsets from the previous generation.

For instance, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which debuted two years ago, still outperforms the Kirin 9010 with median scores of 1,741 for single-core and 4,584 for multi-core tests on Geekbench 6. Notably, this chipset, albeit in its 4G variant, powered the P60 series last year, suggesting a potential decline in performance across generations. Similarly, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 from the previous year, featured in devices like the Poco F5, achieves scores of 1,687 and 4,378 on the same tests.

The performance disparity becomes even more evident in GPU benchmarks, where the Pura70 Ultra struggles to keep up. It records a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited score of 1,531 and an AnTuTu GPU score of 195,380. In comparison, devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, such as the Xiaomi 12S Pro, score significantly higher with 2,740 and 479,604 respectively. Even the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 manages to outperform the Kirin 9010 with scores of 1,956 and 337,915 on these tests.

In summary, the Huawei Pura70 Ultra falls short in terms of competitive performance in the year 2024. However, despite these shortcomings, the device, much like its predecessors in the series, is marketed as a flagship device with a primary focus on photography. In this aspect, it appears to perform relatively well, offering users a compelling camera experience despite its underwhelming chipset performance.
