Facebook Refuses Pakistan’s Request of linking Accounts with Mobile Numbers

Facebook spokesperson Christine Chen said the company had declined the request in order to protect the rights of its users.

Eariler, IT Secretary, Rizwan Bashir explained that the Facebook account is verified through e-mail which is not a secure procedure. He added that connecting opening of account with mobile number is more secure as now SIMS are biometrically verified in Pakistan. But now Facebook has declined to accept this offer.

Syed Ismail Shah, Chairman PTA also said that around 12,977 blasphemous URLs have been removed from Facebook. He told that 6000 complaints are still under review out of which 350 are blocked.

A few days earlier, Facebook Vice President Visited Pakistan to Discuss Issue of Blasphemous Content. He met Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali and discussed various steps and actions taken to remove the content that is illegal in Pakistan.

The minister appreciated Facebook for bridging communication gaps and providing people a platform to interact. Facebook is also serving as a vehicle for promotion of education, businesses, socio-economic development and empowering women in the country.
