Samsung Teases Bixby Integration with Generative AI

Samsung is reportedly considering enhancing Bixby with generative AI capabilities. Won-Joon Choi, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, expressed the company’s perspective on Bixby’s potential evolution, stating, “With the emergence of generative AI and LLM (large language model) technology, I believe that we have to redefine the role of Bixby so that Bixby could be equipped with generative AI and become smarter in the future”.

While Samsung has been enhancing its various apps and services with Galaxy AI features, Bixby, the voice assistant, has not received much attention in terms of generative AI capabilities, despite its presence for a considerable period.

The details regarding Samsung’s strategy for integrating AI into Bixby remain sparse. It’s uncertain whether Bixby will transform into a comprehensive conversational AI chatbot akin to ChatGPT or Google Gemini. However, Samsung’s executive has indicated that the company is committed to diligently developing generative AI features for its primary digital assistant. Despite the lack of specifics, Samsung appears to be actively pursuing advancements in this area for Bixby’s enhancement.

Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t shared many more details about how it plans to incorporate AI in Bixby. It’s unclear if Bixby will transform into a full-fledged conversational AI chatbot like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, but according to the Samsung executive, the company is “working hard” to deliver generative AI features to its core digital assistant.

Samsung has previously stated its intention for Bixby to coexist alongside Galaxy AI on its smartphones. At CES 2024, the company elaborated on how artificial intelligence (AI) would facilitate collaboration between SmartThings and Bixby.
