Snap Plans to Add Watermarks to AI-Generated Images
Social media giant Snap announced its intention to introduce watermarks to AI-generated images on its platform. The move will enhance transparency and ensure users are aware when they encounter AI-generated content.
The company revealed that it would incorporate a small ghost logo with a sparkle icon onto AI-generated images. This watermark would be visible when the image is exported or saved to the camera roll, serving as an indicator that the image was generated using AI technology.

Snap’s decision to implement this watermark aligns with efforts by other tech giants such as Microsoft, Meta, and Google, which have also taken steps to label or identify images created with AI-powered tools.
Currently, Snap offers users the ability to create or edit AI-generated images through features like Snap AI for paid users and a selfie-focused feature called Dreams. These features leverage AI technology to enhance user experiences and create engaging content.
In a blog post outlining its safety and transparency practices around AI, Snap highlighted its commitment to providing users with clear visual markers, such as the sparkling logo, to indicate AI-powered features like Lenses. Additionally, the company introduced context cards to accompany AI-generated images from tools like Dream Selfies, providing users with more information about the origin of the content.
In February, Snap partnered with HackerOne to strengthen its AI image-generation tools through a bug bounty program. The company also implemented a review process to address any issues that may arise during the development of AI-powered lenses.
Snap emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all users have equitable access to and understanding of its AI-powered features. The company stated that it is conducting additional testing to minimize potentially biased AI results, underscoring its dedication to promoting fairness and transparency in its AI practices.

Snapchat has faced scrutiny over its AI-powered features in the past, particularly with the introduction of the “My AI” chatbot, which reportedly returned inappropriate responses to users. In response, the company introduced controls in the Family Center to allow parents and guardians to monitor and restrict their teen’s interactions with AI, demonstrating its commitment to user safety and privacy.
