Whenever the phone is connected to a car using either Bluetooth or a cable, or if the car is moving, the phone will withhold any notifications for things like text messages or news updates.

The notifications include messages from dating sites, such as Tinder, and from gaming applications on the phone.

“It’s all about keeping your eyes on the road,”

said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

“When you are driving, you don’t need to be responding to these kind of messages.”

The mode also enables users to record custom voice messages notifying callers that they are engaged in driving. The feature will be available when the mobile operating system is released.

The iPhone screen will also be locked to prevent drivers from using many of their apps while driving. Users who are just riding will have the ability to disable the feature when they are not driving.
