eTaleem, A Social Welfare Project by Nokia and UNESCO

Pakistan is stated to have a literacy rate of 58% according to a survey by PSLM. This is a shockingly low literacy rate for such a country and the situation is even worse in the rural areas.

In steps to promote woman welfare and a more literate rural population, Nokia and UNESCO have collaborated to launch a mobile phone application, eTaleem. The motive behind this application is to educate people in the rural areas of Pakistan, especially women. The phones that will be hosting this application will be S 40 series of Nokia mobile phones.

A UNESCO driven effort, eTaleem hopes to eradicate illiteracy among women in the rural areas of developing countries. The specific program under which eTaleem is based is, ”Mobile Literacy training for Literacy Training of Rural Female Adults”. This program has been very successful in gaining support from several influential government organisations such as Literacy Department of Punjab and the Education Department of Ministry of Capital Administration Development.

eTaleem is based upon UNESCO’s educational DVDs which were worked upon and created in community learning centers all over Pakistan.

The Nokia application has been quite a success in the rural areas with up to 2500 adult female users situated in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

At the moment some 2500 adult females are using eTaleem application on Nokia mobile phones in rural areas of Punjab and Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa.
