Google Play Store Policy Update: Google Play Requires Generative AI Content Moderation in Android Apps

Android Developers Must Moderate AI-Generated Content to Remain on Google Play Store

Google released updated developer guidelines with an emphasis on generative AI. The tech giant announced that developers will have to include a feature that allows users to report or flag objectionable AI-generated material. Users can do that directly from within the app in the first few months of the next year. It will remove the need for users to exit the app.

Google encourages developers to utilize these reports for content filtering and moderation within their applications. Developers can find out the current in-app reporting system for user-generated content by using this approach. In addition, developers have to comply with Google’s guidelines for the prohibition and prevention of the production of banned content. The examples provided by Google include items that show the abuse or exploitation of children as well as content that supports false behavior.

Google will mandate that Android app developers properly manage generative AI in order to protect consumers

The applications that use AI chatbots, AI image generators, or AI voice and video generators are the ones that need to comply with these enhanced policies. It is crucial to note that these policy changes will not have an impact on AI-related applications. Particularly those apps that use AI for tasks related to productivity or content summaries. Additionally, these changes won’t have an impact on applications that use AI-generated content.

The Mountain View-based corporation has also implemented a change regarding the permissions that are granted to mobile applications. Within applications, Google plans to limit access to photos and videos in the near future. Features that are directly related to the functioning of the app will also have limited access.

Therefore, only apps that have a genuine need for extensive access to these functions will keep general permissions. Whereas, apps that just require occasional access will be prompted to use a system picker. This is because general permissions are only granted to apps that have a legitimate need for extensive access to these tasks.
